Monday September 8th , 2014: Trip to the Nation's Capital

Alex had slept less than 4 hours when Stacey arrived at his place late, like usual, to wake him for what had originally been planned as a camping trip to Point Lookout State Park in Scotland, Maryland. However, after a quick look at the weather forecast for the day that proved to be less than desirable, Alex decided to change the plans from camping to a brief and spontaneous adventure to our nation’s capital. After a detour for a wardrobe change and management of canine responsibilities, Stalex made their way to Penn station to board a train for Washington D.C. This was actually Stacey’s first train ride ever and Alex was sure to pick forward facing seats in order to get a decent view of the scenery as the train traveled through and out of Baltimore.
An hour later, Stalex arrived to D.C. and after a quick break to the restrooms, where Alex managed to capture an amazing moment of a man serenading himself while relieving himself, the couple wandered toward the metro to begin their adventure. Alex mentioned a museum of crime and punishment, but together, he & Stacey decided they should eat first. The pair agreed on a food they both love, cheeseburgers, at Shake Shack, which was not far away. While eating their slightly over priced cheeseburger, cheese fries and chocolate milkshake, Stacey saw on the news that Ray Rice, a Baltimore Ravens running back, had his contract terminated. She mentioned this to Alex, who was not at all pleased to hear this news since he had drafted him for his fantasy football team this season. Nevertheless, Alex did not allow the news to alter his mood for the D.C. adventure with the love of his life that lay ahead of him. After their quick snack, Stalex made their way back towards the museum of crime and punishment, but while there, the two decided it was not worth the money or time when there were so many amazing Smithsonian museums nearby for no cost. They returned to the metro, rode past their stop, swapped trains, then exited at the correct stop to emerge a few blocks away from the National Mall.
After a short walk to the National Mall, Stacey decided they should visit the Museum of Natural History first because she thought the exhibits with the animals would be exciting. Unfortunately, her childhood memories of the museum proved to be wrong and, in reality, it was quite boring. From there, Stalex decided to head to the place Alex was most excited about, the Museum of American History. This museum proved to be equally exciting for the pair, they even made a game of picking photos of historic people they thought looked the strangest or the most fun to hang out with. Stacey truly enjoyed the war exhibits because while growing up, she tried to understand & join in on her Papa Duke’s interest in America’s wars/involvement in wars. A decent amount of time was spent covering the exhibits at the Museum of American History, but with time limitations, Stalex decided to move on to the last museum on their short iteinerary; the Museum of Air and Space.
Stacey used to have a childhood dream of becoming an astronaut, so visiting the Air and Space museum was what she was looking forward to the most. Luckily, Alex was happy visiting any of the museums (except art museums), as long as he went to the Museum of American History and Stacey was enjoying herself throughout the day. At this point in the adventure, Alex’s lack of sleep was beginning to catch up to him, but because he is a champ, he powered through being tired in order to continue enjoying the Stalex D.C. adventure. The pair spent the most amount of time in this museum since Stacey was so excited to see it. They walked through every exhibit and would each pick out their favorite aircraft in every one. Sometimes, they would pick the same one, because great minds think alike. Due to her childhood dreams, Stacey was in awe while wandering through the exhibits that displayed the technological advancements of aeronautical engineering. At one point, she thought to herself, “if only I would have stayed on track throughout high school,” but then remembered everything happens for a reason (even mistakes) and without them, she would not be where she is today. Not being exactly where she is could potentially mean life without Alex, and he is not someone she is willing to live without.
After finishing their tour of the Air and Space Museum, Stalex headed towards a BBQ restaurant called Hill Country, which was tasty but also slightly over priced, to join Alex’s older brother, Christian, for dinner. Following dinner, the two decided to roam a bit while deciding what to do next and stopped at CVS for redbulls and a brush for Stacey. Sitting on a stoop drinking their redbulls and people watching, Stalex thought they should look for a nearby bar that a friend of Alex’s recommended in order to watch Stacey’s favorite baseball team (the Orioles, duh) play while having an alcoholic beverage or two. Once they found the bar, the two agreed it was pricey and not worth staying in D.C. for, so instead, they made their way back to the metro and eventually the train station.

Once comfortably aboard their train home, Stalex acknowledged they had a great time adventuring in the nation’s capital together. During that blissful moment, the couple decided to take a step in the process of rekindling their relationship by re-friending each other on one social network. After much scrutinizing of their profiles, the two made the plunge and are now officially instagram friends once again. To some, this may seem insignificant, but in the life of Stalex, this was a big step. Many emotions emerged during this process, but once it was over with, the two dozed off into a slightly uncomfortable train nap until they arrived back in Baltimore. Upon the return in the city they reside, Stalex made their way to a sports bar with awkwardly dressed employees to catch the end of the Orioles baseball game. From there, they attended to more canine responsibilities before returning “home” for sundaes and a ridiculous horror movie about an antique mirror. All in all, Stalex enjoyed a delightfully successful D.C. adventure.

NYC 8/8/13-8/10/13

The follow is the long lost text message sent from Stacey to Alex on the bus trip home from a two day trip to NYC. Alex gave Stacey explicit instructions to make a list of ten things she enjoyed about the trip, heavy on the adjectives, and send it to him on the bus-ride home. She did not disappoint:

Things I πŸ’œ'd about our NYC tripπŸ—½
1. I enjoyed your thoughtful secretive itinerary. You picked a lot of things to see & do, yet kept it realistic for our short time frame. I was not aware that a lot of things you showed me even existed or I had completely forgotten they were in NYC. Also, despite the fact that we did not get to see everything (that would be impossible in one day), or see all the things we did see up close, in depth, or for long increments of time, you still managed to give me a full day of the best NYC attractions.
2. This may be cheesy, but I honestly enjoyed the fact that I went with you instead of anybody else. You always feel the need to enlighten me with many important & relevant facts, so if I would have went with anyone else, it would have not have been much of an informative trip. In addition, I am glad it was just the two of us. If we were in a group, we would have had to make many compromises throughout the day which would have been frustrating & time consuming.
3. It was neat to see all the hustle & bustle of NYC streets firsthand. While I have obviously seen city traffic before, NYC's is interesting & overwhelming to witness due to the large & diverse amount of pedestrian traffic alone. It was all intimidating at first, but having you there made it a lot better & I eventually became as comfortable as possible for a first timer.
4. Times Square is exactly how I imagined it to be; filled with people, mostly the touristy type, an insane amount of advertising going on & strange costumed people trying to make a quick buck. However, I am glad that I got to see it & that it was the first thing on our list. Looking back, I wish was more excited about seeing other attractions since it was not that great (it wasn't bad either)!
5. Seeing the Rockefeller center in person was neat. I don't really remember how I imagined it now that I've seen it, but it seemed different. I guess because I always pictured it with the ice rink & seeing it in the summer clearly made that impossible. I like how you pointed out the flags surrounding it were of less significant countries than πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ. Maybe one day in my future, I will get to visit it in the winter to see it as an ice rink, along with the giant Christmas tree.
6. Even though I don't really like churches & I had no idea that it existed, St. Patrick's cathedral was cool to see. I do have an appreciation for the architectural skill that is required to create a beautiful gothic building, especially that huge. I just googled it & read a little bit of its history, because I figured you made a point to show it to me for a reason.
7. The Roosevelt island is another NYC attraction that I was unaware of. I know for a fact that I would not be able to commute on & off that island by use of the terrifying tram, but I'm glad you made me get on it since it offered a pretty decent view of the city. I wish the weather was nicer & we brought our mitts, I would have practiced my developing baseball skills & maybe even ran a little bit to make you happy. Even though we did not get to spend much time on the island, I like that it seems a little bit quieter & calmer than the rest of the city.
8. I'm so SO happy I finally got to see the Statue of Liberty! Even though I pulled a spacey & completely forgot it was there, that was something I really wanted to see. Even though I could only see it from a distance, it's hard not to be in awe of that beautiful copper lady. Maybe someday in my future I'll be lucky enough to ride one of those boats to go see that magnificent structure up close & personal.
9. The subway was another thing I enjoyed about NYC...seriously. I'm aware that I've seen baltimore's subway, but the one in NYC is much more boisterous & confusing. It is also filmed for a lot of movies, so it was fun to be there in real life. I know that I would eventually learn to successfully use it on my own, but I am thankful that I don't have to use that as a main source of transportation on a regular basis.
10. Although you believe going there was insignificant & I will most likely forget about it, I did enjoy seeing & walking through Washington Square Park & I will not forget about it. I know that park is one of the best‑known of New York City's public parks & it is a landmark for Greenwich Village, as well as a meeting place and center for cultural activity. I have seen it in movies before a well, so that definitely made it more interesting to visit. Now, if I see it in future movies, I will remember that I have been there & I was with you. 😘

I could actually continue & list a few more things that I enjoyed about NYC, but you said 10 so I'm sticking to my directions. I'm sorry if there are not enough adjectives to appease you, but I honestly did not bull shit my way through this so it would be genuine, whether or not you believe that fact. I know it was not the best of all day trips ever taken, but I am still glad we went. I enjoy doing things with you (except for fighting) and do not want this trip to ruin any potential of future trips together. I know I have said it already, but I am so sorry for getting sloppy drunk to the point of passing out in the bathroom & not being able to use my phone properly. I appreciated going on this trip with you so much, especially since you paid for a hotel room & planned my entire day for me. You are my favorite person & I πŸ’œ you

Stalex goes to the Garden State: 14MAR 2014

Friday March 14th, 2014: Pie day. 53 degrees, windy. Adventure weather. Stalex awoke at the Opa-Oma Homestead early. A mere two hours later after a lot of showering, make-up, not hustling, and impatient waiting they mounted that familiar fiery red steed Swiper and headed off across the rolling hills of northern Harford County bound for the Garden State. Three minutes later, Stacey's girl brains decided they didn't feel like driving anymore so a brief stop at Wawa saw a driver swap, coffee/chocolate milk, and a breakfast Sizzli in each lap. A short time later, the Ole Susky had been crossed by way of the Conowingo Dam, I-95 had been mounted, and the Old Line state had been left behind. The Delaware Memorial Bridge, once looming in the distance was now in the rear view mirror. Stalex was in New Jersey.

Alex was particularly taken aback by the small town and rural American landscape while Stacey played Snapchat or something. Some time later, after a disgruntled Wawa employee or two, Stalex arrived at destination number 1: a uniform store in Cape May where I needed to pick up a few things for work. It was noon on the dot and they had closed an hour earlier. Well that was a wasted trip I mumbled as we began the drive home. The End.

On second thought, the day was still young and the fun had only begun. We headed for the Wildwood Naval Air Museum and were greeted by a donation box in lieu of a museum attendant. Spike Lee once taught me to do the right thing, so $10 later we were playing some serious make believe. Apollo 13 by the Space Shuttle model, A-team next to the Huey, and of course Tom Cruise by the F-14.. all of the classics.

Square peg, round hole

Next up on the Stalex agenda was a slight detour to a different uniform store were I did in fact buy some things I needed for work. You see, recently I've let myself go a little bit and my work uniform has become a little restricting in some of my lumpy places. A nice new baggy set of threads now allows me to eat all of the delicious foods I've come to know and love with seemingly no regard for my appearance in the office place. Back to New Jersey though.. With a little Dorito/Kit-Kat fuel, Stalex was now en route the ultimate East Coast Funderdome: Atlantic City.

Since I'm sort of a poor person, the cheapest looking casino from a distance was targeted which just so happened to be the same place a quick google search had recommended for $5 blackjack: The Showboat. Stalex spent the next two hours cautiously at times, recklessly at others, playing blackjack until a stroke of good luck put them back in the positive and it was time to call it a day $40 richer. Ten minutes later a half Sausage Parmesan and a half Italian sub were shared at White House Sub Shop, a classic little corner spot with friendly service and great atmosphere where the generously portioned subs weren't necessarily anything to write home about but far from the worst I've ever had. Overall a great experience, I'll give it a B+. Belly's stuffed, it was now time to begin the return trek home.

Seeing as the calender had aligned (or circled?) the numbers 3 and 14, it was in fact Pie Day and what better way to celebrate than with a stop at one of New Jersey's hundreds of billions of roadside diners. A short distance from the Delaware Memorial Bridge lies Woodstown, NJ and in it, a diner bearing the town's namesake. I had a slice of Boston Creme (maybe the least pie-ish pie but excellent none the less). She had apple with a scoop of vanilla. Both delicious. Slightly pricey for two cups of coffee and two slices of pie but a great diner none-the-less, a solid B.

The last leg of the return trip took what seemed like much longer than it's actual 60ish minutes but before long Stalex was west of the Susquehanna, Swiper was back in the driveway, The Garden State's bottom portion had been conquered, another road venture had come to an end.

Green Ridge State Forest: 6-8OCT 2013

This blog's inaugural entry will be the tale of the first camping trip Stalex ever went on. Late in the evening on Saturday, October 5th 2013 after several weeks of planning and anticipation, Alex received a startling text from Stacey. In it, Stacey explained that unless Alex made their relationship official via Facebook, she would not be accompanying him to Green Ridge State Forest. Not long prior, after an argument and out of sheer spite, Alex not only changed his relationship status to single but removed it from his profile and and with a full break-up imminent, he simply wasn't willing to change anything. After arriving home from work the next morning, he caught a few hours of sleep prior to departing on what would now be a solo camping trip. Before he could set off however and as fate would have it, Stacey's girl brains intervened because they couldn't resist the idea of a romantic adventure with the love of her life; as he stepped outside to begin packing the car, there she was with an angry mug and attractive girl parts.

An hour later, filled with gas (not petrol because this is America and I'm not a pathetic wiener-boy who has to find romance overseas in countries that are best known for needing America's help in World Wars) and packed to the brim, a Subaru wagon carried the still spiteful couple over the hills of the I-70 west corridor through Howard county bound for Western Maryland. After a brief intermission in Hancock to watch the Ravens beat the stupid Dolphins, Stalex was passing through the Sideling Hill road-cut and gazing upon the wild splendor that is 47,560 acres of the Old Line State's largest continuous slab of public land.

After checking in and selecting a camping site at the headquarters, a 45 minute drive on eroded fire roads brought Stalex to campsite 84, one of the forest's most remote, not-so-conveniently being currently occupied by a group of dingbats that decided to not register for their stay. After a brief encounter and another 45 minute car ride, Stalex was back at the visitor's center selecting another campsite. This one (54 I believe), as they would soon find out, had a nasty hornet infestation over the summer and was closed to campers, a tidbit that apparently wasn't worth noting on the registration sheet at the headquarters to save another lengthy car ride. After more driving, a stop at the scenic Point Lookout view of the upper Potomac and the bordering West Virginia, and well past sunset, Stalex settled into site 62, a secluded little plot of flat ground deep in the southern boundaries of the forest.

Point Lookout overlooking the Potomac River and West Virginia

The first night was filled with booze, beans, and BBQ chicken shared over a campfire. Because this was their first camping trip and they wanted to enjoy themselves, nature decided to take a piss on their dreams by having Stalex awaken to a steady downpour the next morning. a few burnt eggs and sausage links later, a driving tour of the forest seemed like an excellent way to go exploring without letting the rain completely dampen their spirits. Over the next few hours, Subaru's symmetrical AWD system coupled to a Thin Lizzy soundtrack whisked them around the park, past scenic overlooks, wild turkeys and deer, and 100 year old graveyards.

As luck would have it, upon returning the the campsite early in the afternoon, not only was the rain beginning to dissipate, but the sun was starting to peak through the foliage presenting some of the best fall camping weather either participant could have hoped for. Any residual spite had since washed away and Stalex actually started to fully enjoy the trip. Next up, and accompanied by seemingly endless cans of High Life, was an unsuccessful fishing jaunt at Bond's Landing on the Potomac River. Stacey's ever-interupting girl brains prevented her from catching anything and a stroke of bad  luck yielded the same results for Alex. The trip wasn't a total loss however, on the return trip to the campsite, peaking through the trees was a stop-worthy discovery: an abandoned railroad tunnel.

Stickpile Tunnel, GRSF

The second night played out much like the first: food cooked over the fire and booze, only this time Stalex was aided by dry wood from the only business found to be open within the confines of the park, a convenience store at a family campground near Little Orleans, MD. As the sun came up the following day, it was sadly time to pack up and return home. Another scenic drive saw Stalex's departure from GRSF and before long they were back in Baltimore. Not long after a dialogue was exchanged that went something like this:

"So that's it, we're broken u.."

"..Yes, we're done"

"Fine"

*door slams*

Within a week or so Stalex was back together and planning another adventure.
